Around a pool, wood is exposed to water, sun, heat and treatment products. An attractive species is not enough: the material, ventilation and installation details must all be designed for outdoor use.
Key characteristics
Stability, natural durability and resistance to stress come first. The surface should be comfortable under bare feet and managed to reduce splinters and standing water.
Species and sourcing
Teak, iroko and other naturally durable species are often used outdoors, but selection depends on availability, certification and design. Modified or treated timbers can also provide strong performance.
Installation matters as much as wood
The substructure, spacing, joints, falls and airflow determine longevity. Water must drain freely and all fixings must be suitable for outdoor exposure.
Colour and maintenance
Sun and rain naturally shift wood towards grey tones. This evolution can be embraced, or periodic maintenance can preserve the original colour for longer.
